Application of Embryonic Stem Cells in Parkinson’s Disease

چکیده
The nervous system is a stimulating target for regenerative medicine. Parkinson’s disease (PD), which afflicts over a 1 million people in the US, is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration and death of midbrain neurons that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA), resulting in tremors at rest, an inability to initiate or complete routine movements, muscle rigidity, postural instability, and lack of facial expression. Although the etiology of idiopathic PD is not known, several predisposing factors for the dopaminergic depletion associated with the disease have been suggested, including programmed cell death, viral infection, and environmental toxins. DA neurons, in the substantia nigra pars compacta, play a prominent role in the control of many brain functions, such as voluntary movements and many behavioral processes (Maxwell & Li, 2005). These neurons can be identified via the expression of some specific transcription factors, including Engrailed 1 (EN1), PITX3, NURR1, and LMX1b, which are also very important in the development of DA neurons (Smidt et al., 2003).

Spermatogonia stem cells: A new pluripotent source for repairment in regenerative medicine
Recently new reports have proved the pluripotency of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) derived from male gonad. This pluripotent stem cells resembled Embryonic stem cells recognized as Embryonic Stem like cells (ES like cells). ES like cells forms sharp edge colonies that are immunopositive to pluripotency markers and have differentiation capacity to Ectodermal, Mesodermal and Endodermal layers....

Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells which have the ability to indefinitely self-renew and differentiate into all differentiated cells of the body. Regarding their two main properties (unlimited self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation), these cells have various biomedical applications in basic research and cell based therapy. Because the transplantation of differentiated cells...
متن کاملWhat are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are undifferentiated self regenerating multi potential cells. There are three types of stem cells categories by the ability to form after cells and correlated with the body’s development process. Totipotent: these stem cells can form an entire organism such as fertilized egg. Ploripotent: ploripotent cells are those that can form any cell in the body but cannot form an entire organ...

Bone tissue engineering has been one of the most promising areas of research, providing a potential clinical application to cure bone defects. Recently, various stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs), bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs), umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs), adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs), muscle-derived stem cell...
متن کاملImprovement in Signs of Parkinson's Disease in Rats Following Transplantation of Embryonic Stem Cells
Purpose: Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disease produced by the death of dopaminergic neurons, and the response to current treatments is varied. It is important to develop a model for the evaluation of ES cells as an alternative model for treatment. Materials and Methods: The model for PD was developed in rats. First, ES cells were transplanted into experimental models in three groups: ...
متن کاملIrisin protect the Dopaminergic neurons of the Substantia nigra in the rat model of Parkinson’s disease
Objective(s): Exercise ameliorates the quality of life and reduces the risk of neurological derangements such as Alzheimer’s (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Irisin is a product of the physical activity and is a circulating hormone that regulates the energy metabolism in the body. In the nervous system, Irisin influences neurogenesis and neural differentiation in mic...
